Oprah and Tolle fuel New Age revival (Addendum)

Posted by wordforit on April 12, 2008

The WordPress staff must have been working on the site this morning (Thank You!) when I posted “The Twisted World of Oprah and Friends” because it would not let me add the following:

A few years ago, I began to receive mail from a psychic in California who was trying to convince me that I was missing out by not sending money to finance a full disclosure of “The Secret”. The letters were written in a voice of foreboding to which even the least superstitious would want to react with an immediate forward of a check. I’m paraphrasing because the letters were thrown out, but I do remember the content was intriguing and spoke of “The Secret” being around for many years and that I was one of only a few chosen to participate.

In the interim, I have learned that Alice Bailey was one of the first to introduce the concept of “newly channeled doctrines” who spread the message most successfully (the link provides names of others). In short, it goes much deeper and is more sinister than appears on the surface. “New Age” is a misnomer in that it is not “new” and the proffered “enlightenment” is a (very) slick invitation to darkness.

If you are enthralled with this doctrine, that is certainly your business. I expect the same courtesy in my belief that Christians are to be a watchman and contend for the faith.

Berit Kjos has an extensive site with background information and awareness to help us become better equipped to avoid and warn others of snares. I have recently noticed that “Jesus” is being quoted from “The Course in Miracles”. Please at least acknowledge the warning signs before dismissing them out-of-hand.

This book’s main purpose is … to bring about a shift in consciousness…. Not everyone is ready yet, but many are, and with each person who awakens, the momentum in the collective consciousness grows.”[1,p.6-7]  Eckhart Tolle

Oprah is helping propel the spiritual enlightenment book [New Earth] to dizzying heights, thanks to an unprecedented online promotion that includes a 10-week interactive Webcast discussion…. Oprah: ‘I am a Christian who believes that there are certainly many more paths to God other than Christianity.’”[2]

“Jesus said… ‘No one comes to the Father except through Me.‘” John 14:6

Remember the lasting symbols of the sixties? Beatlemania? “Free love”? The peace sign? Maharishi Yogi (the subject of John Lennon’s song, “Sexy Sadie”)?[3]

The New Age revolution seemed to fade away, didn’t it? But instead it was spreading its hidden roots across America. Now its mysticism and sexual “freedom” are back in full bloom! And countless ex-hippies — who cut their hair and joined mainstream America — are reviving Eastern meditation, yogic “breathing” and other pathways to “collective consciousness.”

This “awakening” is a natural part of the postmodern rejection of truth. Neither facts, logical thinking, nor Biblical faith are relevant to the new spirituality. So it’s not surprising that Eckhart Tolle, celebrated author of A New Earth, dismisses them all as “form” or “ego“: distracting “attachments” that block awareness of human Divinity and oneness with “God.”

Tolle’s teaching is anything but new. One of his sources of inspiration was the 13th century “father of German mysticism,” Meister Eckhart, who wrote, “He who would be serene and pure needs but one thing, detachment.”[4] It’s interesting that Tolle did “let go” of any attachment to his original first name, Ulrich. He changed it to Eckhart.

To validate his message, Eckhart Tolle reinterprets history. Notice how he blends Eastern and Western mysticism — praising Zen as well as the Kabbalah

“The greatest achievement of humanity is… the recognition of its own dysfunction, its own madness. In the distant past, this recognition already came to a few individuals. A man called Gautama Siddhartha, who lived 2,600 years ago in India, was perhaps the first who saw it with absolute clarity. Later, the title Buddha was conferred upon him. Buddha means ‘the awakened one.’”[1,p.14]

“…religions, to a large extent, became divisive rather than unifying forces. … They became ideologies, belief systems people could identify with and so use them to enhance their false sense of self. Through them, they could make themselves ‘right’ and others ‘wrong’…”[1,p.15]

“…movements developed within all major religions that represented not only a rediscovery, but in some cases an intensification of the light of the original teaching. This is how Gnosticism and mysticism came into existence in early and medieval Christianity, Sufism in the Islamic religion, Hasidism and Kabbala in Judaism, Advaita Vedanta in Hinduism, Zen… in Buddhism….

“Only a small minority of people had access to them. Their numbers were never large enough to have any significant impact on the deep collective unconsciousness of the majority.”[1,p.16-17]

Since the spiritual climate has changed, “enlightened” prophets expect the current awakening to reach a critical mass that will usher all of humanity (except uncompromising resisters) into the New Earth — a physical manifestation of the New Heaven (which has nothing in common with the Biblical heaven). Detached from “form,” all will know their identity as “I AM,” or universal “Consciousness.”

Of course, if you’re more comfortable with God’s Word than with occult experiences, you won’t share in this awakening. You can’t stand with one foot in each camp.

The Twisted World of Oprah and Friends

If you haven’t heard of “A Course in Miracles” or the proposed “Peace Alliance”, then please pay attention. “New Age” queen Oprah Winfrey is promoting both, and it seems that what Oprah wants she gets due to her financial status and her loyal fans.

Starting January 1, 2008, she began a daily feature on XM Satellite Radio featuring “A Course in Miracles”-one lesson a day. And also, this year, she will have her own television network.

Marianne Williamson has picked up and run with the “Miracles” course, which was channeled to a woman back in the 1960s. In 1965, Helen Schucman heard an “inner voice” saying, “This is a course in miracles-please take note.” For seven years, she took spiritual dictation from a demon who said he was “Jesus”. “A Course in Miracles” has now become the “New Age” bible.

Here are a few statements from the course:

* There is no sin.

* The journey to the cross should be the last “useless journey”.

* Do not make the pathetic error of “clinging to the old rugged cross.”

* The Name of “Jesus” is just symbolic of all the gods to which you pray.

* The recognition of God is the recognition of yourself.

* The “atonement” is the final lesson man needs to learn, for it teaches him that, never having sinned, he has no need of salvation.

This should come as no surprise in these latter days as the Bible is clear that some will not give heed to sound doctrine but rather listen to the doctrine of demons (II Tim. 4:3,4).

But the story of Oprah’s and Williamson’s push for all things unusual and unrighteous does not stop here. Williamson is trying to get a Cabinet level seat as a part of the “Peace Alliance” push by the two women. Check out the U.S. Department of Peace website.

Think about what the Bible has to say about peace apart from the Prince of Peace. It says it will be a futile effort and even bring destruction (I Thess. 5:3). The Antichrist will play off of peace, but Daniel says “by peace he shall destroy many” (Dan. 8:25). Yet Oprah and friends believe this “Peace Alliance” will usher in an era of global peace founded on “New Age” spirituality. They refer to it as a “civil rights movement of the soul.”

We live in strange and deceptive times so to sharpen your discernment, visit our “Spiritual Deception” category at the Web site. As believers, let us thank God for the real course in miracles. It’s called the Bible.

Radio Note: Warren Smith is one of the best expounders on these issues for when he was a “New Ager,” he was caught up in such things, particularly “A Course in Miracles.” Hear my hour with him on “Radio Archives” for February 2, 2008, hour one. He outlines his story in his book, “From the New Age to Amazing Grace” available in my print newsletter and soon on my Web site.
